Eastern India is quite different from the other regions. This region cannot be defined by one particular culture or theme. The region is spanned by tribes in Orissa, intellectuals in Calcutta and tea gardens in Darjeeling. It also houses the birthplace of Buddhism – Bodh Gaya. There are infinite possibilities in Eastern India.
India would not be complete without West Bengal. The cultural corner has added a lot to India's identity.
Calcutta or Kolkata is considered to be India's cultural hub. The city and its surrounding areas has been the theme of authors and film-makers alike. The city with the highest density of population is architecturally known for the Victoria Memorial, the Writer's Building, the General Post Office and other such colonial buildings.
North of Calcutta lies a land that has been left wonderfully fertile through the sift deposited by the Ganges. The fields are dotted by Terracotta temples in Bishnupur, Shantiniketan and Murshidabad. These places are also known for silk, Tagore and the Nawabs respectively. Amartya Sen had graduated from Shantiniketan.

Going further would take one to Darjeeling where the famous Darjeeling tea beckons. Popularized by the British, Darjeeling has always been a holiday destination especially during the summers when the cool mountains beckon.
In the south, there are the Sunderbans, the largest mangrove forests in the world.
To the north of West Bengal lies the state of Sikkim. Sikkim, is dominated and inspired by the Khangchendzonga. Known for the tours in and around Gangtok, Sikkim is also a destination for short treks (4 – 6days) through the Khangchendzonga National Park and is used by mountaineers to reach the Khangchendzonga base camp.
The south of West Bengal has the state of Orissa. Orissa is known for its tribes and the Sun Temple. The Sun Temple had acted as a beacon for sailors for nearly a thousand years. Temples have also been major site for pilgrimages. Orissa is also known for the sandy beaches of Puri which draws people from all over India – especially Kolkata.

Orissa is a major landmark in history. The fertile plain where the capital Bhubaneshwar now stands was the scene of a bloody battle between the Emperor Asoka and the warriors of Kalinga. The massacre of the opponents of Kalinga filled the Emperor's heart with remorse for his deeds. He then denounced war and took up Buddhism. He went on to become a champion of Buddhism and did much to promote the religion. |
