 the moon and ritual baths

Bali Yatra
Karthik Purnima was considered the most auspicious day by traders to venture on a journey to distant lands. To mark the occasion small boats made of cork, colored paper and banana tree barks are floated in the Mahandi river.

Pushkar
Devotees take a ritual bath at Pushkar lake. A cattle fair is held on the vast open sands of the mela ground where camels and horses are auctioned for camel safaris in india. Competitions, impromptu games, folk theatre and sweet-meals jostle for attention and space. It’s the ultimate carnival.

Sonepur
After a bath at the confluence of the Holy Ganges and the Gandhak, devotees pray at the temple shrine. The Sonepur fair lasts a fortnight starting from the full-moon day. The cattle fair here is the largest of its kind in Asia.
