Chandigarh is on the edge of the Shiwalik hills, the outermost edge of the Himalayan range Constructed to plan by the French architect, Le Corbusier, it is divided into 47 numbered sectors, separated by broad avenues.

At Chandigarh, Dr. Zakir Hussain Rose Garden, the largest in Asia, has over a 1000 varieties of roses, which bloom from November to February. The amazing Rock Garden, a creation of an untutored genius called Nek Chand Saini, is laid out with unique sculptures of man, bird and beast created from rock formations, broken glass bangles, bottle tops, old and broken chinaware, coal, human hair, discarded sinks and sanitaryware, cowry shells and all kinds of junk. The Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts displaying Mughal, Kangra and Rajasthan miniatures and Gandhara Sculptures and Paintings is also in Chandigarh.
