Manipur and Assam
Manipur is said to be the original home of the mulberry silk worm. Assam leads in the production of non-mulberry silk. Muga is a particular kind of silk found only in Assam, and has a golden shade.
Kanchipuram and Varanasi
Silk came to be used in religious ceremonies, therefore the industry began to thrive in cities that were known for their religious significance. Brocade saris in gold and silver are unique to Varanasi.
Paithan
The design of their Paithani sari of Maharashtra consists of parrots and peacocks woven in gold.
Ganeshpur
Almost half the population in Ganeshpur is engaged in Tussar silk weaving.
Murshidabad
The place is famous for its Baluchari saris. Some saris recreate an entire scene from the scriptures. |
