A small town, capital of the Coorg region, Madikeri is a quiet and unhurried hill station, 124 kms west of Mysore. Untill 1956, when it was included in Karnataka, Coorg (or Kodagu) was a mini state in its own right.
It is a mountainous area in the southwest of the state where the Western Ghats start to tumble down towards the sea, and is green, scenic and fertile. Traditionally the home of the Kodava tribe. Coorg is now an important coffee growing area.
