Kumbakonam is a great pilgrimage center. Once in twelve years there is a religious festival known as Mahamakam when thousands of Hindus from all over India assemble to have a dip in the Lake. Kumbakonam has many temples of which the Sarangapani, Kumbeswarar, Nageswara and Ramaswamy all very old but restored during the Vijayanagara period (14 to 16 century) are well known for their architectural excellence.
