From a small garage in Saket in 1979, to a sprawling office in the heart of Greater Kailash today, IndeBo has successfully carried on the legacy of Malathi Ramaswamy, the founder and original journey-maker of the company. Fascinated with the history and culture of the country, she chose to not just explore, but weave travel itineraries through the country’s inherent contradictions and diversity.
Wife of army veteran Major Ramaswamy, and a doting mother to two children, Ram and Ravi, Mrs Ramaswamy took her first step towards travel way back in 1963, when she worked as a guide with the Tourist Department of Government of India. It was during this stint that she met world renowned Yoga exponent Sri BKS Iyengar in 1971, when he happened to be on one of her Delhi bus tours. The tour ended with the Yoga guru asking her to take their group for a trip to Agra and Jaipur. This was the beginning of an exhilarating journey she was about to undertake.
The real adventure, however, began when her sister, also a popular tourist guide in erstwhile Madras, happened to introduce her to Mr Jean Pierre Bastiou, who was leading a tour group from Brazil. Mrs Ramaswamy and her husband helped them find accommodation in Kashmir for a month. On their return, Mr Bastiou asked her if she could plan a 21-day trip for them, and she agreed. Her stupendous capability as a planner made the group come back to her over the years, and eventually gave her the confidence to start her own venture.
Over the years, Mrs Ramaswamy continued as a tour guide for many groups travelling to India, and managed to traverse the length and breadth of the country. She was not limited to India, but also toured the world. She gave talks about the vast cultural landscape of India at schools and clubs across America, travelled to Europe, and planned mammoth itineraries across India and Nepal for her sister’s Belgian friends, the Bogaerts. She juggled all this, while also earning her Bachelor and Master's degrees, and enrolling for Spanish lessons in Delhi.
All her travels and the friends she made along the way, gave her the much-needed push to take her love for tourism to the next level. Her husband Rama also decided to retire from the army and join her in the endeavours.
After having worked with a company called Tourist International for some years, and helping a premier travel agency in Belgium plan a couple of tours, they decided to channelize their efforts towards their own venture. With help from the Bogaerts, who also ran Indebo International in Belgium, they zeroed down on IndeBo (India) (Ind for India and Bo for beautiful in the Brazilian language), as their company name.
On their return, they started working on the venture, and organized their first trip as a company in January 1980, for a group from South Africa. They hired their first employee, Shiv Murat Yadav, and a typist who was a Catholic Brother - Br. Antony, while Mrs Ramaswamy worked on programs and her husband handled finance and administration.
From shaping little minds as a teacher in a convent school in Jammu, to spearheading a first-of-its-kind travel initiative in the country with IndeBo, Malathi Ramaswamy remained a deep-dyed guide all her life. The 80-member team of the company now carries out her vision of bringing the world to India, one great trip at a time.
Boasting of a young, dynamic and a resilient professionals that go out-of-the-way to meet the travel goals of each traveller, the team at IndeBo works on various themes (textiles, religion, festivals, tribes, rivers etc) and have weaved many journeys in the sub-continent (India, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka). They are piqued by the impulses of discerning travellers and take pride in bringing together extraordinary experiences for them.
